Have you ever felt instantly closer to someone because you both disliked the same person?

Perhaps it happened at work, when you discovered that a colleague shared your frustrations about a manager. Perhaps a friendship developed around a difficult family member, or you found yourself connecting with someone because you had both experienced a similar kind of disappointment in relationships.

There can be genuine comfort in finding someone who understands what you have been through. Being heard matters, especially when an experience has left you feeling isolated, frustrated or questioning your own perceptions.

There is something worth examining, though: are you connecting because you genuinely enjoy each other, or because you are standing on the same side of a conflict?

The two can coexist. Shared frustration can be the beginning of a meaningful friendship. The question is what happens when the conflict becomes the primary reason the relationship exists.

At work, this can mean spending more time discussing the person you dislike than building the career you want. In friendships, it can mean repeatedly revisiting the same story instead of creating new experiences together. In relationships, it can mean mistaking the intensity of shared frustration for genuine compatibility.

And sometimes, the person you have bonded with over a shared enemy becomes someone you barely have anything in common with once the conflict is no longer part of the picture.

Your enemy’s enemy is not automatically your friend.

In my work with the Akashic Records, I have often reflected on how people can become deeply attached to a story long after they have gained important insights from the experience. They may have understood the dynamics, recognised the patterns and learnt what the experience had to teach them, yet continue returning to the same story, the same frustration and sometimes even the same kind of relationship.

This is where I find the idea of the Divine Mirror particularly interesting. When an experience triggers something within us, there may be an opportunity to explore what it reveals about our boundaries, expectations, values, unresolved patterns or the way we relate to ourselves. This does not mean that someone else's harmful behaviour is your fault, or that you need to tolerate mistreatment to learn from an experience. It means you can take responsibility for what happens next in your own life, even when you were not responsible for what happened to you.

You can honour what an experience taught you without allowing it to become your identity.

At some point, you get to ask yourself what you want to build with the energy you have invested in understanding the past. What friendships would you love to cultivate? What would a fulfilling romantic relationship look like in everyday life? What creative projects, professional opportunities or experiences have been waiting for more of your attention?

You can spend years learning about narcissism, avoidant attachment, toxic dynamics and every psychological term that seems to explain what happened. Understanding these concepts can be valuable, especially when they help you recognise harmful patterns and make informed decisions. There also comes a point when your attention deserves to move towards the relationships you want, the work you want to create and the life you want to experience.

This is one of the things I explore through Cosmic Akashic work: understanding the deeper themes that may be influencing your present experience and exploring what you are ready to do with that understanding.
